The Silent Waters (THE ELEMENTS SERIES Book 3) Kindle Edition
Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday's hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow's promises.
I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.
I was ten years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.
This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.
Of moments.

This book was simply amazing. Every time I read a Brittainy Cherry book, I fall more and more in love with her writing. She doesn’t just tell you a story, she takes you on an amazing journey. These characters, they’re so raw and real, and so amazingly developed, you can’t help but fall in love with them. Brittainy is a one-click author for me, if she writes it, I’ll read it.
“The world keeps spinning because your heartbeats exist.”
The Silent Waters is Book 3 on The Element Series, although this is a series of books that revolve around the elements, Book 1 (The Air He Breathes), Book 2 (The Fire Between High and Lo), these books are complete standalones. The books are totally unrelated and the characters do not cross books. So you could skip the previous 2 books, although I strongly suggest you read them all. You will not be disappointed, they’re all amazing.
The Silent Waters tells the story of Maggie May and Brooks, neighbors, childhood best friends, and eventually lovers as they go through the best and worst experiences of their lives. From the prologue through the epilogue the story spans a few decades. Now, I’m not sure how much I want to say, I know I must sound like a broken record but sometimes you need to go into some books blind and discover them by yourself. And I definitely thing this is one of those. So, I will try not to spoil major plot points.
“I hadn’t known you could hear someone’s voice so clearly in the silent moments.”
Maggie May is a beautiful, smart and lively child that experiences a traumatic event that marks it forever. She is such a beautiful and amazingly developed character, I dare you not to fall in love with her. I felt so much for her and her struggles. She was truly remarkable.
“I didn’t always feel like smiling, but Brooks? He made me feel as if smiling was all I ever wanted to do.”
“He drove me crazy. His hold, his touch, his voice, his words. Everything about his soul lit me on fire, and I was proud to burn beside him.”
“I loved him. I wasn’t certain when it had happened. I wasn’t certain if it was a group of moments collected over time or simply the heroic act he’d performed while I was sleeping, but it didn’t matter. It didn’t matter when, or why, or how it had happened. It didn’t matter how many moments gathered together to form the love. It didn’t matter if it was right or wrong.”
And Brooks, what can I say about Brooks. He’s amazing and beautiful, patient and understanding. He was Maggie’s anchor, her beacon of light through the darkness. He was hers, completely. I loved everything about Brooks. He also went through a dark time and was able to overcome everything life threw at him. He’s definitely at the top of by Brittainy heroes, along with Logan.
“She quietly chuckled and rolled her eyes. I loved that. I loved when she laughed, even though it was so quiet. It was the closest thing I had to her voice.”
“It was freeing to feel so much with someone who felt it too. It was during those moments that I felt I learned the most about her. It was in those moments that she learned the most about me.”
“I love you, Maggie May,” he whispered, looking into my eyes. “I mean, I keep staring at you, and I can’t help but think, ‘Wow. I’m really loving this girl right now.’ You know? Everything about you, I love. The easy days and the hard ones, too. Maybe I love you even more on the hard days. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say it yet, because I don’t know if you’re ready, but that’s okay. You take all the time you need, but I wanted to let you know, because when you love someone, I think you gotta scream it, otherwise the love in your chest becomes a bit heavy. It weighs you down, and you start wondering if the other person loves you, too. I’m not worried about that, though. I’m just sitting here, next to you, looking at the small freckles on your face that most people miss, thinkin’ about how much I love you in this moment.”
The love between them was definitely my favorite part of the book, it was so pure, so real, so powerful. It’s what kept them both going in difficult times and what kept me hopeful that they totally deserved a happy ending.
“Do you promise me the same type of love I’ve read about in my books? He shook his head, yawning. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me closer as I became engulfed by his warmth. “No, Maggie May. I promise you so much more.””
“Maggie May, you’re my favorite song.”
Being in love with someone didn’t mean you only loved them during the sunbeams. It meant you stood by their side during the cloudy nights, too.
“I was thankful for it all, the quiet moments and the painful ones, too. I was thankful for her willingness to allow me to bleed out against her. I was thankful for her bleeding out onto my soul.”
This book, it will hook you from the prologue all the way to the author’s note at the end. I felt a lot while reading this book. Happiness, sadness, fear, frustration, love, anger. It was truly a journey. It was also so moving and inspirational. And beautiful, just beautiful. As you can see, I have so many highlights, it’s not even funny. So much beauty in those words!
“That’s what true love meant to me. True love meant you could laugh at mistakes. True love meant you could whisper secrets. True love meant you never had to dance alone.”
“Love didn’t come with guidelines. It flowed into a person with only hope as its current. There wasn’t a list of rules to follow, making sure you cared for it correctly. It didn’t give you instructions to keep it pure. It simply showed up quietly, praying you wouldn’t let it slip away.”
So, needless to say, I absolutely, 100% recommend The Silent Waters. It’s one of my favorite books this year. It has all the feels and you will not be disappointed! And if you haven’t read the other 2 books in this series, do me a favor and pick those up too, they’re amazing. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
“What he didn’t know was that he was the biggest adventure of my life. He was my favorite journey, my anchor that always led me home.”
“Moments. Humans always remember the moments. We recall the steps that led us to where we were meant to be. The words that inspired or crushed us. The incidents that scarred us and swallowed us whole. I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me, moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included her.”
5 stars!!!
“Not all broken things need to be fixed. Sometimes they just need to be loved.”
Two five star books on the bounce and two authors also receiving their first five-star review from me, it has been an amazing reading week.
Brittainy Cherry never fails to deliver with what I crave the most…emotion and with The Silent Waters she delivered one hell of an emotional read. A story that was gripping and captivating from the start, a story that was powerful and emotional, a story that makes you dig deep, a story that resonates, a story that you will never, ever forget. This was a story that definitely left its mark, an indelible print on my heart and my soul, because this book touched me, this book made me think about myself, this book made me think about the author and this book has had me tossing and turning all night thinking about the characters. This is me typing a review with tears streaming down my face as I relive the unbelievable story I read last night, so please excuse my ramblings. This is a story that you should read blind, expect the unexpected and for that reason I am keeping my review about my emotions and a little about the characters.
“It amazed me how a heart could shatter in a crowded room and the sound couldn’t be heard by a single person.”
When I read a Brittainy C Cherry book I know that I will probably cry, I know that she will deliver something unique, I know that she will deliver something powerful, I know that she will deliver a story with meaning and I know that she will deliver a message and this message was received loud and clear. Every single character in this book had his or her place, nobody was superfluous to the story developing around them and every character was magical in their own way. I may have wobbled with a couple of characters but alas, I should never have worried, they totally redeemed themselves.
Maggie Mae Riley was a beautiful character and when we are first introduced to her as a little girl she will have your heart melting from the very start. Maggie was the apple of her daddy’s eye, a single dad that always put his Maggie at the forefront of his thoughts and actions, so when he finally finds “the one” he can finally give Maggie something that she has always wanted…a loving family. Moving into his future wife’s home, Maggie is now the proud owner of a step-mother, step-brother and step-sister who welcome her into the family with open arms. They become a tight family unit and the “step” is soon dropped, Maggie was one of their own.
“The world keeps spinning because your heartbeat exists.”
Brooks Griffin was Maggie’s brothers best friend. At first, Maggie was a fly in his ointment, that annoying little bugger that kept following him around, dreaming of their wedding and making all the arrangements in her fairy tale bubble. Maggie sent him love notes on the regular and no matter how hard and mean he was back, she never got the hint, she carried on regardless, as far as Maggie Mae Riley was concerned she would marry Brooks Griffin, she loved him, even from such a young age and we all know that little boys “hate” those girls they secretly love.
“Love didn’t come with guidelines. It flowed into a person with only hope as its current. There wasn’t a list of rules to follow, making sure you cared for it correctly. It didn’t give you instructions to keep it pure. It simply showed up quietly, praying you wouldn’t let it slip away.”
The Silent Waters follows these two through life as little kids, as teenagers and as adults and because of this there are time jumps. All jumps are relevant and really piece together the lives that these two lead, both together and apart. Told in alternate POV’s this book delivers that character connection in spades as you are treated to the thoughts and feelings of both characters. Their growth from little kids, to friends to lovers and everything else in between was tangible. Their connection was solid, they were each other’s anchor, they were true soul mates. Their communication through their love of music and books was ingenious and really cemented the bond that these two had. Sometimes life was with them, sometimes life was against them, but even apart these two were tethered. You never forget your first love but you also never forget your soul mate. Brooks’ nickname for Maggie was Magnet because “there’s this magnetic pull of friendship between us…You’re my Magnet” and no matter what life threw at them, they always pulled back together.
“You can’t just read these books and think that means you’re living. It’s their story, not yours, and it’s heartbreaking to watch someone so young toss away their chance at writing their own story.”
The synopsis of this book sums it up perfectly, this is a collection of moments, some hurtful, some hopeful and some full of promise, heart breaking moments and breath taking moments. This is a story about a boy and a girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. Despite the highs and lows this was their journey, their promise to each other and their fight to deliver on their promises. Brittainy C Cherry is one super talented lady. I felt this authors blood, sweat and tears in these words, I felt the truth behind the characters, but most of all I knew because I had been there. I lost my voice once albeit not through the same circumstances, speech Is a powerful weapon, it’s something we take for granted but should be cherished, but as the saying goes, sometimes actions speak louder than words.
“Everyone has scars. Some people are just better at hiding them.”
This is an incredible story; one I would urge everyone to read. Not only is this my favourite of this author but is also one of my favourites of the year, of all time even. Brittainy C Cherry, you nailed it, your authors note broke me but united we stand, don’t ever lose your voice again, the book world would be a sadder place for it.
Where this book lost a star for me was two part. One being that it’s totally unbelievable that neither Maggie nor her parents wouldn’t have sought out therapy after what she went through. I get that it had to happen to cause all of the drama throughout the book but still not at all realistic. The second is the end; the last 20% of this book tried to wrap things up way too perfectly and way too quickly. The trigger for Maggie to start talking again was probably realistic, but going from zero to 100 after that seemed very fast. And everything else being so picture perfect bordered on corny.

Everything can change in a moment. Maggie has been infatuated with Brooks since she was 6. When she lost her voice at the age of 10, Brooks was the only one who could really hear her silence. He was her light in dark days. Until tragedy struck him.
This book!!! It is going to stay with me. It’s such a beautiful, heart wrenching, yet heartwarming romance about young love growing through the peaks and valleys. It’s about second chances. Not just in love, but in life. It’s about family. And the love between them.
But Brooks. My gosh. Brooks is one of my all time favourites. Never have I read a more supportive, loving kid and then teen turned grown man. You will swoon. The way in which he accepted her for her, when so many others didn’t. My heart couldn’t take the ways in which he loved and supported her. Giving her a voice. Their connection was epic. There’s some steam, but this story is more about their connection then the physical act.
I will say, my practical mind had one main question throughout it all. But I let the story take me and think it happened the way it was meant happen and was satisfied with it in the end.
This story is about moments. Moments that stick with you, you treasure and you recreate. It’s about a love that stands the test of time. I loved how the author carried little pieces throughout the book and tied them all up at the end to grab your emotions! I got teary throughout this one, and cried at the end. Then read the authors note and cried again. Gosh how I loved this one. MUST READ!
"The world keeps spinning because your heartbeat exists"
I shall forever remember these words. And remind myself of it whenever I feel like I am drowning.
It was a book about family, love, self worth and mental health/trauma. All pretty heavy topics but handled in a raw believable way. I was rooting for the characters at the end and I felt like the ending was well resolved. I'm cautiously downloading the rest of Brittainy Cherry's books in this series. Cautiously only because I have a feeling I will feel as wrung out as a used tea towel by the end of the series!
I feel like I should point out that I read this series out of order. I didn't realise until I was more than halfway through the book, so I assume that each book is a stand-alone that can loosely interconnect with each other because I understood the book fine with out reading the prior books.
Read this book if you love reading about
• Complicated but loyal family dynamics.
• Story book love, but realistic in the way that you have to work at keeping it.
• Characters with inner truma and demons that they have to over come
• A tear jerker but with happy ending! Honestly just read it you wont regret it!
