Biography

  • Brenda Lee (born December 11, 1944) is an American pop and country music singer. She became one of the biggest pop stars in the early ’60s and has released a prodigious amount of material over a career spanning 60 years, hailing from Lithona, Georgia, U.S.

Having won her first singing contest by the age of six, following the death of her father, by the age of 10 she was her family’s main breadwinner . The singer’s breakthrough came after appearing on the ABC-TV program “Ozark Jubilee”, where the audience refused to let her leave the stage until she had sung three more songs. Lee subsequently signed a record deal with Decca Records in 1956 who issued her debut single “Jambayala” the same year, followed by “Bigelow 6-200”. Credited to “Little Brenda Lee (9 years old)”, the singer went on to release a pair of Christmas singles, “I’m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus” and “Christy Christmas”, greatly increasing her exposure nationally.

Working with some of Nashville's finest session musicians including Hank Garland, Floyd Cramer, and Owen Bradley, the singer earned her first hit in 1960 with rockabilly single “Sweet Nothin’s”. In the next few years Brenda Lee would enjoy the height of her musical success aided by the Top 10 singles “I’m Sorry”, “I Want to Be Wanted”, “Emotions”, “You Can Depend on Me”, “Dum Dum”, “Fool #1”, “Break It to Me Gently”, and “All Alone Am I”. Tapping into listeners of both pop and country, children, adolescents and adults, the high-quality songwriting and music production put Lee in a class of her own until the British Invasion of the mid-‘60s. Lee’s hit singles continued with 1963’s “Losing You”, 1964’s “Is It True?”, and 1966’s “Coming on Strong” however were marked by declining sales.

Reunited with Owen Bradley in the early ‘70s, Lee reinvented herself as a country music artist earning a string of Top 10 singles including 1973’s “Nobody Wins” and “Sunday Sunrise”, 1974’s “Wrong Ideas” and “Big Four Poster Bed”, and 1975’s “Rock on Baby” and “He’s My Rock”. Other singles were to follow including collaborations with Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, and a duet with George Jones. Despite her singles no longer reaching prominency in the charts, Lee has continued to released new music well into the ‘80s and ‘90s, with her most recent release the 2007 compilation “Gospel Duets with Treasured Friends”, featuring the likes of Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, and Vince Gill.

  • Brenda Lee

If you were to ask most people who they thought the top-charting female vocalist of the sixties was, you’d probably get plenty pointing to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald or Aretha Franklin as likely candidates; instead, though, the answer is probably a little more surprising, with the accolade actually falling to Brenda Lee. Ever since she launched her career in the mid-fifties as a child performer, she’s been something of a household name in the States, but she didn’t really truly break through in musical terms until the sixties, when the likes of ‘I Want to Be Wanted’, ‘You Can Depend on Me’, ‘That’s All You Gotta Do’ and ‘Break It to Me Gently’ all providing her with top ten hits. In the decades since, she’s continued to record sporadically, with the seventies a busy decade and those since less so; she’s made albums in four different languages in that time, though, and in 2007, her first album in ten years saw her try her hand at gospel, with an all-star cast of collaborators including Dolly Parton, Huey Lewis and Emmylou Harris. She still performs sporadically in the U.S., too, performing all of her biggest its form her career as an adult; UK appearances, though, remain rare.

  • Excellent concert - we hope you make it an annual event - we'll be there each time! Your energy, your sincere talk to the audience in thanks of supporting you and your talents, your spirit and talents - you shared so much on that stage! Your mix of singing and talking to the audience and even inviting them up on stage to sing with you -what a treat. I couldn't believe when the show ended that 2 hours had passed. Hope you enjoyed your birthday and that huge cake. We still listen to your vinyl records and recently found a 45 of yours. We'll watch to catch you in Nashville again and hope to get your signature. We have a guest room with our framed record albums that are signed and we have one of yours. You were so gracious to sign another time and we were able to give it as a gift to my 81 year old mother - she remembered listening to you and remembered the way you looked on the album. Thank you so much for an enjoyable and memorable evening of song and fellowship.
