Product Description

The bh-1000 is a unique design hang on back skimmer in that the pump is mounted external and under the actual skimmer body allowing for much less room needed behind the aquarium. Also by placing the pump outside the skimmer and the aquarium there is no heat exchanged to the water. This design also allows for easy removal of the pump for cleaning and maintenance.

Great Skimmer, Easy to Set Up, Easy to Use!

One of the best simmers I have ever used. Had to use youtube to set it up, directions stink. I'm glad I read reviews before setting it up. I had to cut one inch off intake tube to keep water line at edge of black plastic rim line. This allows the skimmer to skim the surface water and me to keep water line at top of tank. I am using this on new 38 gallon tank. Within three days it was pulling out yellow scum. This skimmer might be over kill for a 38 gallon tank but I am very happy with it. I have 5 inches of space behind my tank and after installing the skimmer I still have over an inch of space between the wall and skimmer. If you don't like micro bubbles in your tank make sure to use the foam discs on return line. As for noise it is very quiet.
PROS:

Excellent skimmer

I use this on a 55 gallon reef setup and it works incredible. Started skimming gunk almost immediately. Initially I had an eshopps HOB that my LFS couldn't get to stop overflowing no matter what he did. Apparently he was able to get it working in his own tank after nearly 1 month. This one was easy to set up (as other people mention, go to youtube, the included instructions are basically useless), relatively quiet, and dredges up absurd amounts of junk. Can't recommend it enough.

One note, mine did not come with any "water level" indicator line on the collection cup like they show in photos so initially I couldn't keep the unit from overflowing until I found a suggestion to keep the bottom of the collection cup just above the overflow hole between the 2 chambers (which I had inadvertently blocked. As soon as I moved it just above the hole, the unit started to work perfectly.

Unrelated update: My LFS still has the eshopps sitting (and overflowing) on one of their own tanks 2 months later. They say they are fighting with eshopps to get it taken back as they think the wrong air pump is installed on it.

I've had a few different skimmers as a 30 + year marine aquarium hobbyist. This by far is the best h.o.b., I've ever had. It took about a week or so to season it, but after that it has, and continues to operate flawlessly. I wanted to give it a 5 star, but for one modification I had to make. The system sits too low in my tank so I had to put a half inch block of wood between the inlet/ outlet pipes and the top rim of my aquarium. Then I had to cut the inlet pipe length off by about 2 and 1/2 inches. That said I expected that some adjustments would need to be made and at this point I still would of given it a 5 stare. But... the following reason is why, sadly I had to subtract 1 star. The white skimmer inlet cup I had to cut an " L " shape out of the back of it, so it then would be able to be adjusted slightly higher, giving it an optimal position to skim the top of the water allowing for optimal gas exchange.
I highly recommend this unit for those looking for a hassle free h.o.b. skimmer. Those of you that have experience with skimmers know how from time to time micro adjustments are required from time to time. But not this one!!! Once it is seasoned, open the air inlet wide and let it ride!!
So to recap.. I wouldn't look any further for a skimmer. This one will treat you tride and true with hassle free enjoyment! Just know if you have an aquarium with a border around the top of it you may have to do a slight modification to the inlet cup!!

If you are looking at buying a skimmer, this is not the one for you. I do believe a skimmer is necessary for a saltwater tank. I also strongly believe this is NOT the one for you :)

Pros:
- It works pretty well skimming when working properly. However, that is far and few between - see cons.

Cons:
- It overflows all the time. If you want to come into your room with gallons of water sitting on the floor this is the product for you - They say "oh you must have it setup wrong or your water levels are wrong, etc etc etc." - I have watched videos and I know I have it setup correctly. Just do waste your money.

- MOST Importantly - I had the skimmer for less than a year and it broke. It being under warranty still, I contacted the manufacture. They sent me a part of the skimmer that I had to disassemble and reassemble. The skimmer does not work properly any longer and the manufacture will not replace the whole skimmer that is under warranty. You can go to the CoralVue support page to see all the people having the same problem I had.

If you are going to spend the money on a skimmer, just do yourself a favor and buy and real skimmer that does not hang on the back of your tank. Plus if anything goes wrong with your purchase (which from my experience and everything I have read, it is HIGH) the company is not going to help you out and just going to send you parts to make you try and fix the thing yourself.

Great HOB protein skimmer. It really does the job. Honestly a bit freaky starting it and watching the water level get so high! I had a little water spillage my first few times starting it back up after water changes. My lesson learned to fix this issue don't top up the aquarium fully until after protein skimmer is going for bit. I leave it a little under normal water level then add back in the water after, this is just how I have fixed it. I've watched every single video there is on this skimmer!! Any way it keeps my aquarium amazingly clean. I also added some cheato to the back compartment and my water is crystal clear.

Good value. Great product. Fairly easy to use! Easy cleaning too that super important.
And the collection cup is super easy to just take off and empty.

In 40 yrs in saltwater had many protein skimmers, this one is awesome and skims perfectly. looks like dark brown coffee. Once I figure out how to prime the external pump it work nicely, air bubbles galore in the chamber. once you clean the top cup of the dark brown scum, leave the cup off and start the skimmer till it settles down and install the cup, then adjust the cup height. This avoids the skimmer from overflowing. The instructions was useless. I read in the reviews many had overflowing skimmer problems.
