Peloton Bike+ error codes; support call = $1600 frame replacement?

Cycling

This past week I got a msg on the screen of my Bike+:

”Something went wrong. Please unplug your Bike and plug it back in.”

I did so, and then when it came back up I got a different msg with error codes B0215, B0221, B0222. I called the support number and after an hour or more of troubleshooting, I was told that the only solution was a $1600 frame replacement.

I bought the Bike+ June 2021 ($2700) so it lasted 1.5 years with light use before crapping out on me. Needless to say it’s out of warranty at this point.

I pressed the tech some more on the phone and they suggested a $100 tech service call to see if they can do anything else they couldn’t do by phone. That hasn’t been scheduled yet, so tonight I decided to take of the sweat guards to see if I could find anything else (which they didn’t have me do Friday).

On the right side of the bike where the computer is (assuming that’s the computer for the bike itself) there are 3 white connectors, with 1 on the bottom which is out of sight with the cover on. They did ask me to confirm that the 3 connectors were seated in place which they were. They said nothing about the bottom connector. I noticed that it wasn’t connected at all, and I’m almost positive there was no way I could have accidentally disconnected it by removing the cover.

I made sure the bike was off, re-connected it, and went through similar tests they had me do by phone. No change. It didn’t seem to make a difference. At least this time the LED light on the side of the computer flashed red once after powering it back up. But still, every time it gets to the calibration resistance step, flashes 2% quickly, then goes to a gray status circle and does nothing.

Everything else is fine with the bike, as far as normal operations go. I can ride it, turn the resistance knob, and it works like it always has before. I just can’t get it back to the screen that has the “just ride” link (I no longer have a subscription). I’d at least like to get it back to that point, but am unable to.

Does anyone have any suggestions of other things to try? I checked all the cables I could find on the bike, and also tried disconnecting and reconnecting them all. The behavior is the same.

I’m hoping that someone can assist me to at least get me back to the “just ride” page.

The Timeline

June 2021 - Took delivery of Bike+ $2700.

Jan 6 2023 - Happy new year! Bike+ error codes presented.

Jan 7 - Called Peloton. Went through troubleshooting steps with no resolution. Quoted $1600 frame replacement since warranty expired. Charged my CC $100 to schedule a service tech appt. Bike+ now bricked and can't get back to "Just ride" screen because it can't get past the calibration.

Jan 9 - Called Peloton. Pleaded again that the $1600 frame replacement only 6 mos out of warranty was bullshit. Their policy restricts them from helping on repair costs. She said it might be the end of the week before I hear from anyone regarding an appt. Zero customer loyalty for a $2700 Bike+ that's only lasted 1.5 years with minimal use. Started doing research on non-Peloton bike replacements: went to Dicks Sporting Goods and test drove a Schwinn IC4 -- would work for me as I don't use Peloton's overpriced service (only "just ride") but the IC4 wasn't as sturdy feeling as Peloton. $800 for the Schwinn IC4, and $700 for the Bowflex C6 (at their website). Bowflex is more appealing at this point (far superior warranty to Peloton, too). Update: the prices went up $200 a few days later.

Jan 17 - 10 days after my initial call, I receive an email to schedule an appt. I called, and am now waiting for a text msg with the appt date/time. The email included: "If this service appointment does not resolve the issue at hand, it will require the frame to be replaced. The errors you're receiving are directly associated with failure of the sensor assembly, and the sensor assembly cannot be replaced on the Bike+. The only option to fix this would be to replace the frame. Due to your warranty being expired, we will require a payment for this to be completed if it's needed. The cost of the frame replacement will be $1595 plus applicable taxes."

I had these error codes on the bike plus - they mean the sensor assembly has died.

I went through all the troubleshooting and unfortunately the only option was a frame replacement because the sensor assembly on the bike plus isn't standalone. I confirmed this by going into the apps on the bike and accessing 'peloton sensor diagnostics'. This should show you the sensor isn't functioning properly. If so, only thing a tech can do really is confirm this is what's happened.

I bought my bike secondhand so it too was out of warranty and so this was not welcome news. The person on chat did say they would escalate to see if they could offer me a discount on the frame, but because it was secondhand, there was nothing they could do. You may have better luck if you purchased direct from them.

Good luck, hope that helps.

Thanks for confirming the demise of my Bike+. It's shocking that it only lasted a year and a half. I bought it because it has (had?) such a great reputation.

Now they want $1600 to fix it? I'd rather sell it off for parts and buy a Schwinn. I wasn't using the Peloton subscription anyway.

u/sherronron avatar

the frame has a 5 year manufacturer warranty. my sensor went out and was swapped out and I only had my bike for 1 1/2 years. I used the fact that the frame cannot be replaced without the sensor. So say i cracked my frame and used my warranty, the sensor would be included even if you told them that you did not want a sensor. I spent about 3 hours explaining this to several supervisors until they gave in and agreed to swap it out. Further more on the bike plus assembly guide, parts are labeled and there is no sensor labeled as a part. Why? Because it is included in the frame.

Edited

You are an Angel. On the phone with them now (holding while they talk to a manager) and ready to use all your advice. Because no way in hell that after 2 years with my bike+ (no extended warranty - didn’t know that was an option) that I’m going to pay to replace a frame. …. After 1 hour of talking with a higher up they’re going to get back to me tomorrow with some options that don’t involve a frame so let’s see 🙏🏽

I just put a comma up above, but I want you to know that the same thing just happened to me and I just got off the phone with them and they are sending me a new frame next week

How old is your bike?

Would you believe I'm still waiting for that service call? Unbelievable...

Oof, this is another reason why marrying a computer and a exercise equipment isn't a good idea.

u/NitroLada avatar

Why? It's sensors.. without sensors, then it'll just be a dumb exercise bike with no metrics and obviously that's not what peloton is about. What OP has now is essentially a bike with no computers and a good idea to you?

I believe a better way to frame the issue is that the sensors should not be inaccessible. This is a right to repair issue more than anything else.

u/mortifyyou avatar

Yes, a closed bike ecosystem lend itself to "right to repair" issues like this one, though not necessarily.

More replies
u/mortifyyou avatar

The bike should transmit cadence/power metrics via a standard protocol, of course.

Out of curiosity, I might be going through the same situation you did . I bought a second hand peloton Plus as well. Everything worked fine and then the bike just stopped working. No power on the screen and it Doesn't make a noise at the wheel hub when plugged in, but when I plug the screen in directly it works. So out of curiosity, what did you have to end up spending to get the bike to work just in case I have to go down the same dark road.

u/No-Negotiation527 avatar

Your issue sounds different to mine as I always had power going through the bike, so the screen would power on, it just couldn't calibrate. Have you tried replacing the power cable? You can also see if any of the USB C cables running power through the bike are at fault by unplugging and replacing them with other USB C to USB C cables. I would start there.

I had to do a frame replacement ultimately, which was £1295. I think it's $1500/1600 dollars. Good luck!

As a second hand owner do you know if peloton sells a warranty? And. If I get the bike working do you think I should sell it asap? I'm really worried about having to spy a lot to get it fixed.

u/No-Negotiation527 avatar

Secondhand bikes aren't eligible for warranty unfortunately - but you can still email support about your issue and they will help, but if you need technicians to come out, there is a charge for that.

This is what mines doing. They’re telling me it’s the sensor that’s inaccessible. The frame has a 5 year warranty, but the sensor inside the frame isn’t included in that frame warranty? Really aggravating & not sure what to do!

I was able to fix my bike. I purchased a new USB c male to USB c female cable rated for 100watts. I than replaced the cable in the frame that goes from the sensor to the back of the back where the charger plugs in with the new cable I bought. This fixed all my issues. I think peloton uses cheap cables

Did you buy your bike+ with a credit card with extended warranty protection? (Just trying to think of another way to get coverage)

I used my Apple Card which does not offer extended warranty protection. I appreciate you suggesting another possible route, though!

I really feel like fewer and fewer credit cards are offering this sort of protection. :/

Perhaps. It's Peloton's fault!

Edited

It’s shitty, no doubt, and I’d be livid, but it’s possible with any large purchase when it dies out of warranty. It’s very disappointing. You’d like to trust that a product can last longer than its warranty….

I hope everyone who reads this post takes it as a sign to pay extra for the extended warranty.

Sadly no. I used the Apple Card. I called them to confirm and there's nothing they can do to help. They were at least sympathetic. Yay.

u/ChaosCouncil avatar

They said nothing about the bottom connector. I noticed that it wasn’t connected at all, and I’m almost positive there was no way I could have accidentally disconnected it by removing the cover.

This stood out to me. If there was a connector present, and it was not plugged in, that is a huge red flag. Double check all of the connections. Remove them, make sure the pins (if there are any) are properly seated, and try to reconnect everything. Perhaps clean the connection with alcohol if they look to be dirty.

The video below is the best I could find about how the connectors should looks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxnTuKQxPjw

Edited

That's exactly what I did... I disconnected everything that I could find, and re-connected.

The YT video shows the sensor cable I am referring to that wasn't connected. Even after I re-connected it (and made sure the pin side of the cable matches the pin side of the receiving/female side) it doesn't snap into place. It doesn't look dirty but I'll try hitting both sides with alcohol to see if that helps.

Update: it didn't help

u/IBurnForChocolate avatar

When you say it doesn't snap into place, do you think contact isn't being made?

I do believe it is making contact because I can’t push it in any further. It’s just not clicking like the other cables and I can pull it out without releasing the clip.

I never buy warranties. Except for Peloton. I've already had our entire bike replaced once, and it wouldn't surprise me if it needs to be replaced again at some point before the extended warranty expires.

Recently purchased the Row which I will also be adding the extended warranty to.

I am sorry I cannot assist you, but commenting to say I am having the exact same issue/error codes with my bike+

I have a service tech coming to look at it on January 21st, free of charge.

Hoping that I don’t have to do a frame swap at full price either.

I’ve had my bike since January 2021, so almost exactly two years. Between my partner and I we have exactly 150 rides. So not crazy usage either.

The bike seems perfectly fine, one day it was working, the next day it’s not working anymore.

Have gone through all the troubleshooting with customer service and no luck. Extremely frustrating.

u/heart_of_gold2 avatar

You guys are scaring me. 😳 I just bought a bike+ that is being delivered in one week.

Buy the extended warranty. I didn't, and now I'm paying the price. It's not built to last.

I'm really scared because I just bought one second hand.

u/heart_of_gold2 avatar

I got my bike+ delivered almost a month ago and I’ve used it almost every day since then. I haven’t had any issues so far, but I plan to buy the extended warranty, just in case anything happens down the line.

WAIT. Your Bike+ is even older than mine (yours purchased Jan 2021, mine purchased June 2021) and they offered to send a tech to you free of charge? Yet for me they took my credit card during the call for $100? And, BTW that was Friday and I've heard nothing.

You must have purchased the extended warranty then... because I called back and they said there's no way they could waive it out of warranty.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I don’t not have the extended warranty, it took me several calls each being at least an hour+ long, to finally receive a free service tech appointment.

I also had to follow up about the service tech appointment because they didn’t schedule it at first.

And the service tech is likely just going to tell me that I have to replace the frame.

Which I’ve been advised to negotiate on (by a peloton employee). To argue that this should fall under the 5 year warranty with the frame, or at minimum negotiate lowering the full cost of a new frame.

Another employee also told me I could just purchase the extended warranty right now and then the frame could be replaced that way.

I will keep you updated on what happens, tech appointment isn’t until January 21.

u/glumpolitician avatar

Yes, if you need to replace the entire frame then it's shocking to me that it wouldn't be included in the 5 year warranty. At least, that's what the chart on their own site would suggest. I'd push back hard on that because 2 years of usage is ridiculous.

u/sherronron avatar

i had my bike over 12 months and they swapped out my frame because I did my homework on the 5 year warranty.

More replies

They have similar issues with the tread. Had a "motor replacement" issue and Peloton attempted to get me to buy an entire base for $1800. I mentioned if their tech thought it needed a new motor wouldn't that be covered under their motor warranty listed on their website. That warranty was like 3 years (I think) for the regular Tread. There were a lot of groans and "let me get my manager" but they eventually replaced my 13.5 month old Tread with no extended warranty for free.

Peloton engineering has huge issues with not making its equipment modular enough to replace individual parts. Long term the equipment is going to disappoint a lot of people... especially at the price they're charging.

u/sherronron avatar

Read the peloton limited warranty. The frame has a 5 year warranty.

Well WTH Peloton? You get a free service appt for a Bike+ 6 months older than mine, and they give me no break? This just keeps getting worse.

The lady I spoke with tonight said that I "should" hear from someone by the end of the week. "You just need to give them time." How about my time? The paying customer who you already took $100 from immediately? Ugh. I suspect I, like you, will be waiting weeks.

I confirmed tonight with Peloton that you have to purchase the extended warranty within a year of your bike purchase. So there is no way you or I could purchase it now. I logged onto their website and there's no option to purchase an extended warranty.

I've talked with 2 Peloton employees now (by phone) and they are stone cold don't-give-two-shits about my situation. I'm out of warranty, so it's my problem--not theirs.

I'm very interested in how this plays out for you.

You won't hear back.

In my similar experiences, the first rep agreed to a free tech being scheduled at 13.5 months for my tread out of warranty. I just needed to wait 1-2 business days for a scheduler to reach out. The scheduler of course never reached out and it took multiple other calls to get someone to come on site. And the second person was like "I have no idea why they said this should be a free service call."

UPDATE AFTER SERVICE TECH APPT.

The service techs seem to think there is nothing wrong with my frame and that I should start by just getting a new screen. So not very helpful as peloton will likely just keep repeating I need a new frame. So now I need to test my negotiating skills and get my bike back running for as little cost as possible. Will keep updated once this is all over.

This is a very strong endorsement for buying the extended warranty.

Edit: Four+ year Peloton owner here. Some things are going to fail because you’re putting weight on moving parts. A handy person could probably fix most of them on their own.

My first Peloton was a regular Bike. The $200 extended warranty would have paid for itself, unquestionably.

Just bought a Bike+ and got the extended warranty. Upon hearing about the sensor mentioned in this post, I’m glad I did and would recommend it.

u/Slouchy87 avatar

statistically, extended warranties benefit the warrantor. i mean it's easy to say they should have bought the extended warranty in hindsight, but really OP just got unlucky.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Statistically over all electronics purchases yes, but Peloton seems to be the one purchase where it's worth it. No help to OP, but for others reading, maybe.

u/Slouchy87 avatar

do pelotons break at a higher rate than electronics?

Or a strong endorsement to rent instead of buy. Or a strong endorsement that Peloton has a poor record with long term reliability. Giving a company more money to counteract a poor product always annoys me.

So with the monitor not plugged in to the bike, when you unplug and re-plug the bike power cord to your electrical outlet, do you get the ‘homing dance’ of the magnets?

If you're talking about when you power it on and the red magnets move up and down, that happens every time I power cycle it.

The next thing I would want to have tried is a jumper cable between the resistance mechanism and the screen. There are two wires normally between there, the shorter one that leads to the port in the sweat guard, and the longer one that goes up through the handlebars. i would see if running a known good cable straight to the monitor makes any change.

Edited

So basically just connect a USB-C cable from the screen to the "computer" (the thing that has all the white connectors) ? Sure, I can try that.

Update: tried it and it didn’t change a thing. The screen did come on but same result.

Rats. You're definitely going from the USB port on the 'back' of the unit, above the bar code, right? There should be nothing in the USB port under the three white connectors on the front.

Cheaper to buy a used bike off Facebook Marketplace

Really... anywhere. Or even a regular Peloton Bike is cheaper than buying a new frame for a Bike+. Insane!

Is that considered the frame? Thought the frame had a 5 year warranty, and the display had a 12 month or something like that?

Yes, the frame is 5 years but that's just for the metal part AFAIK (cracks and breaks). The rest is covered under "parts" which is only 1. It's not a very good warranty.

u/petersimmons22 avatar

It would be a shame if your frame cracked and they had to replace it. I hear they may have no choice but to replace sensors with the frame.

You should see what they do if the frame itself i damaged. If that repair comes with new sensors because of the design of the bike then that may be your way to have warranty cover the damage.

u/sherronron avatar

Yes. You cannot just order the frame without the sensors coming with it, therefore the frame includes the sensors. Mine was swapped out and It was well past 12 months and I did not have the time extended warranty! My sensor went out.

Just fyi the Schwinn ic4 and bowflex c6 is the same bike with different decals and exterior look. I ordered a bowflex in 2020, Schwinn ic4 was 200 cheaper. I happened upon a comment somewhere saying they are owned and made by the same parent company. Called bowflex and an operator confirmed that it’s the same bike with identical parts.

Yes, both Schwinn and Bowflex are owned by Nautilus. They are identical except for branding and colors. The Bowflex has a few red accents (seat & knobs) while the Schwinn features a lot more red and white accents.

I just had the same problem, and I just got off the phone with Peloton after two hours and they are sending me a frame for free next week! My bike+ is over 2 years old and out of warranty.

Hi! Was your issue sensors? I’m thinking that’s my problem as well, but getting a bit freaked out that some people on this thread are debating if they’ll agree to replace the frame if the sensors fail.

More replies
u/CptSaveABro avatar

Got the bike secondhand. Factory reset it to clear previous owner’s info. Got this same error (B0228). Peloton is recommending a new computer screen for $650. This seems like a software issue and Peloton’s customer service is severely lacking in solution/knowledgeability.

u/Sad_Bison_9075 avatar

Is this a bike + exclusive issue where the sensing system is part of the frame or is the OG bike also designed this way? Sorry to hear of your pains OP. I’d be livid if I had that problem.

I am. $2700 paid June 2021. Now they want $1600 more to fix it. $4300 for this isn't worth it. I'd rather try to sell it for parts and buy a different brand.

u/Sad_Bison_9075 avatar

Yep 100%. This was kind of why I opted for the OG bike instead. Shame that Peloton doesnt offer affordable fixes or modular components that can be swapped out. I hope the OG bikes don’t have this type of design.

It's a horrible design if the only option is to replace the entire frame for $1600.

u/Sad_Bison_9075 avatar

Shame on Peloton for a lousy design. Hope it gets resolved for you.

If you bought the bike plus with a credit card, you may have an extra year warranty through the credit card

I wish that was the case, however no extended warranty is offered.

u/sherronron avatar

The frame has a 5 year warranty. As soon as my replacement arrives next week, I am willing to share the email with them agreeing to swap it out. Let me know. I am getting so mad reading this. I went through hell getting it swapped out but I did not let up off of their necks!!!

u/Chogatto avatar

Did you ever get that frame replaced for free? I'm going through the same thing as the original poster here. Exact same errors and have been troubleshooting with Peloton for 2 weeks now. They are now talking about replacing the frame.

From your posts It sounds like 50% of the time they aren’t honoring the frame warranty? Agh I’m pretty sure I have the censor problem and am getting concerned.

Can you buy extended warranty- my bike+was purchased @Nov 2020? What’s the cost?

You have to buy the extended warranty within one year of original purchase.

More replies

If you bought this using a cc you may have an “extended warranty” feature baked into the purchase. Good luck

Get a female/female USB C connector and connect the power directly to the sensor board using a generic USB C cable to bridge from the sensor board. It should be power adapter cable, then connector, then usb C cable into sensor.

See if your bike powers up and will let you ride and change resistance. If so, you have a bad inner frame cable. Sadly, Peloton will still want you to replace the frame but you may be able to fight it out with them over charging 1700 because one cable in the frame is fucked.

Thank you. Tried USB-C cables and there's nothing wrong with the resistance, and the screen turns on just fine. It just won't get past the calibration step so I can "just ride".

It's extremely ridiculous that they want ME to pay for a frame swap because their poorly engineered bike can't be repaired. At this point I'm still waiting for a service repair call (which I already paid for last Friday).

Their tactic is primed for a class action lawsuit if you ask me...
