Opened her up last night to drink in her first starlight in almost 5 years. Her bones are creaky, but we managed to focus her on Saturn, using only our hands and our eyes. Then we leaned in, to absorb the magestic beauty; the deep, reverberating dignity.

Absolute DREAM JOB for an astronomer wanting to influence the direction of science and public engagement at an iconic, historic observatory (and under a fantastic manager too, speaking from experience😄) #astronomyjobs #scicommjobs #scicommjob #sciengage

There are also two reflecting telescopes, a 24” and a 41” built in 1967, that were recently roboticized and are almost ready to get back onto Skynet Robotic Telescope Network so they can be used by students and astronomers around the world. Photo: The 24" looking at Saturn.

Yerkes houses the largest refracting telescope in the world (40 inch lenses)! The Great Refractor saw its first light in 1897. Here I am with my kid in front of the mechanical wonder 125 years later.

Observed with students on the 40” refractor . We aimed at Altair to focus and test the pointing and tracking. Then we found Saturn and the nearly full moon. It was so bright that I couldnt look through the finder scope w my eye and projected the image on my hand.

Just another day at work . After a group of volunteers helped clean the dome yesterday, i’m tackling the old (and original 1897) observing stairs. The shelves are caked in century-old dust and bits and bobs. It’s gross and fascinating at the same time.

A 125 year old observatory almost running fully on its own power!

Yerkes Observatory, built to look to the sky, now finds a modern power source in our brightest star, the Sun! ☀️ Solar panels now power much of the Observatory with renewable energy. Thank you @Generac & @RENEW_Wisconsin for your support! #cleanenergy Photo: @carlreinemann

I just stood outside for about ten minutes. I admired the bright full moon next to saturn in the east and then stood in the moon’s shadow by a tree and saw three bright orangey perseid meteors streaking across the western sky. An evening to relax into.

Out walking the grounds trying to piece together all things I’ve been hearing and learning over the last month. It’s SO MUCH and it’s SO FUN! I’m standing in the happy little pollinator meadow 🌼😊🐝

Preparing for another BIG MOVE! I’ve done this many times, but this is the first time as a home owner and with a school-aged kid. Planning is complicated, goodbyes are hard, AND it still feels so freeing to get rid of *stuff*, simplify, and dream of what’s to come. #sparkingjoy
A hike through trees on Mt Lemmon with #idaluna as we say goodbye to Tucson and the mountians nearby.
A view of tucson i the distance from Mt Lemmon. There is a rock formation that looks like a huge lizard looking out over the valley.

I'm proud of what we've accomplished together ! I can't wait for the world to experience the Education and Public Outreach program when it becomes available, and we're all looking forward to when that deluge of LSST data starts flowing! 🙌
