Lewis Carroll's 19th-century fantasy has been reinvented many times, most famously by Walt Disney. And now American McGee, one of the designers behind the Quake and Doom series, issues his addition to the Looking Glass legends with American McGee's Alice. Players take on the role of a wiser, more industrious heroine who sets out in this third-person 3-D action game to free Wonderland from the tyranny of the Queen of Hearts. Alice will confront a host of weird creatures in surreal settings and solve numerous puzzles through more than 15 levels of gameplay.

Still Fun After All These Years
I've beaten American McGee's Alice more times than I can remember. For a time there, it was incompatible, but for those of you looking to blow the dust off those old discs, I have good news: it works in Windows 7. No Compatibility Mode tweaking or other fiddling necessary: I just stuck in the disc, ran the installer, and was good to go. You won't find a stunning max resolution, but you can force newer tweaks through the nVidia Control Panel using the "Application-specific" settings. To that end, I've gone back down the rabbit-hole, and now I'm going to take you along with me. American McGee's "Alice" was designed to tell a newer story from Lewis Carroll's classic: Alice's family perished in a terrible fire. Alice has gone mad with grief and survivor's guilt. You are Alice, returned to a weeping Wonderland that begs for her to set it right. This third-person shooter uses a variety of clever weapons, from croquet mallets that bludgeon one way, alt-fire an electrified croquet ball another...to the very magical Blunderbuss if you can find it in its secret location. The many creatures that menace Alice are a combination of folklore (fiery imps, a witch who would eagerly eat you) to book-lore (the Jabberwock, the Mad Hatter), and unique creations in between (creepy dollface spiders, a centipede with a German soldier's helmet and flaming eyes). The environments are interesting, and the voicework is for the most part ahead of its time (which puts it close to the professional-polish we get in newer games today). There are some problems you would expect from an older game, such as a difficult jumping mechanic and occasional button-lag, but otherwise the slow climb through the many interesting levels make it all worth the effort. If you have (or are considering purchasing) this title, you will find an enjoyable dark gothic tale with color and imagination. Graphics only get so good, but gameplay makes up for it.

This is an extremely imaginative, VERY colorful, visually immersive game, chock full of puzzles and colorful characters, with not too much fighting. The gameplay is a bit like, say, The Wheel of Time video game from the late 90's (based on Robert Jordan's books). This is one of the best video games I have ever played, EASILY in the top 10, if not the top 5 best video games I have played. (The best video games I have ever played are: American McGee's Alice, Loom, The Wheel of Time, Baldur's Gate I and II, Dragon Age: Origins, Sim City 3 and 4 (3 is better overall), the graphics/art in Legend of Kyrandia I and II, and certain aspects of the Elder Scrolls games, (like Oblivion), but the Elder Scrolls games in general need more "content" in their VERY expansive games.) This game is right up there with Baldur's Gate, possibly my favorite game of all time.

This game is also a little bit macabre, but it isn't Stephen King's "It", and it most certainly is not "The Exorcist", or all those bloody "horror" movies like, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", etc. Probably fine for kids 13 and up or so.

I received the used game and was excited to give this to my son. I lost my own copy and i know he really wanted to play this game! well, it arrived and it downloaded and made it all the way to the intro menu. after that i wouldn't play. I've played this game on the same pc before, and have had no problems. checked to make sure we had all the requirements, which we did, but even so I had played this game years ago on the same pc. well, i reached out to the ones who sold it and asked if i could return or exchange for another? i got a reply email saying yes, i can return it! then, right after i had read the email, I was cut off. no way to return, no contact from them whatsoever. so i paid money for a game that doesn't work, disappointing my son. they also lied about being able to return it. i would not buy from them, ever!

When this game came out in 2000, I was ten years old. My dad played it; I played it. My friends watched me play it. It is hands down one of my favorite games ever, and the graphics are ahead of its time. The voice acting and story line is amazing, though the game play can be glitchy. Sometimes you'll encounter a ghost wall, or your jump will turn you in the wrong direction. Overall, the game is very well done and the small glitches it harbors are easily overlooked.
I'm an avid gamer, but I'm also a scattered-brained spazzoid, so I tend to lose games. I have purchased American McGee's Alice no less than five times, and I will continue to do so as I lose them, because frankly, I can't afford not to have this in my life.
The seller delivered on time and well. Game booklet and instruction manual in good condition. He also put an empty DVD case in the box to keep the items from shifting around inside *keeps the items inside snug together, no rattling* which I liked quite a bit.

The game came to me in great condition, and with the original booklet, but the seller had said it runs on Windows 10, and it does NOT.

[This review is based on the console edition of the game that is packaged with the sequel Alice: Madness Returns.]

When American McGee's Alice first came out, critics considered the game to be possibly the best-looking of the year. They praised the breath-takingly gorgeous visuals, saying the game looks so fantastic that you'll trudge through the mind-numbingly dull gameplay just to see what the next area will look like.

Unfortunately, ten years later the once innovative visuals now look quite dated, leaving the focus now on the aforementioned mediocre gameplay. The result is a game that, honestly, isn't very fun to play. The unique world makes for an enjoyable experience for awhile (if you can look past grating dialogue that seems very pleased with itself, mistakingly believing itself to be more clever than it is -- "entering the skool requires a leap in logic"? No, it only required pressing A to jump into a window, no logic involved!), but after the first few hours it becomes so tedious and dull that there really doesn't seem any reason to continue playing.

Fortunately, it comes free in new copies of Alice: Madness Returns, so you won't be wasting any money on it (only your time). However, if you bought a used copy or rented it, and are wondering if the original game is worth the extra $10? I would advise against it.

This game may be 11 years old, but it still entertains. This had to be about the best graphics at the time, and it still is pretty decent for today's market. It starts pretty easy, but it does get harder each level. Use the early levels to get good at your weapons, and you will do just fine. Definitely recommend this game!

I've played this game over three times fully though and plan to again always. This is one of the greatest games ever in my opinion for both creativity with existing styles of game development and for media experience when immersed with the music and time. The whole way through there are various environment aspects that make it more then just a run through. The twisted story is well infused into the mental reality if you ask me, this is how I really seen the story as if it only looks like it's for children because it was thought up by hippies. This version of the story one could argue makes the original story look like a real account of loosing it in a scary place with only acceptance.

I think American McGee's Alice is one of my all time favorite games. It has lush, dark, beautifully rendered settings. It has interesting and graphically compelling characters and a good backstory. Granted it is not for the kiddies but that this is made for us older gamers is just another plus in my book. I was drawn into Alice's world within minutes of starting play. If you have played Clive Barker's Undying and enjoyed that then you will probably love Alice. It edges out Undying a bit in my book in areas of ease of game play and coolness of weoponery but it is atmospherically similar. In terms of comments on difficulties with movement I have yet to find a game that didn't have places where the movement was tricky or unpredictable. I didn't notice any really bad or overly annoying problems in Alice myself.
