Heather Balog is a self proclaimed "Bad Mommy" and the author of ten novels, including the Amy Maxwell Cozy Mystery Series. She also collaborates with her teenage daughter on the Lexie Maxwell Series for young readers. She blogs at "The Bad Mommy Diaries" which, according to her family, is mostly obnoxious exaggeration, but it's much cheaper than therapy. When Heather is not writing or complaining on her blog, she's a school nurse, taxi driver, household Sudoku champion, and a runner with way too many aches and pains to be any good. She lives with her husband and her two children who all make fun of her inability to exist without the help of a Post-It note list on a daily basis and her inability to cook a decent meal. She also has a very needy dog who does not make fun of her, but wakes her up in the middle of the night to frolic in the yard, and empties the garbage in the kitchen ten times a day just to get her blood pressure boiling. As a man and after reading some of the reviews, I really didn't think this book was for me. But how wrong I was, I really loved this book. You can tell that Heather Balog really has children because she tells it exactly like it is with kids. I laughed so hard at some of the antics of Amy and the kids, but yet was intrigued by what she was getting herself into with the neighbors. Sometimes when giving reviews for books, it is very easy to create a spoiler and I really don't want to do this. Read this book if you want a laugh out loud funny mystery that will have you guessing until the very end. Great job Mrs. Balog and keep up the very entertaining writing!

Overall, I enjoyed this novel, and I went on to buy the next one. But I will say, I really thought the author was into overkill on the hostility toward her kids and husband. I don't believe in cheating. I read a LOT of romance, and I won't tolerate it in those books. But since this is cozy mystery, I have to say...I almost WANTED Amy to ditch her useless husband for the DEA agent, Jason. Of course, Amy's fantasy life is pretty realistic. But c'mon...can you PLEASE not make your protagonist's husband seem irredeemable? Or her kids, for that matter? Throwing in a random sentence or two about actually loving them doesn't make it believable. I'm hoping in the next book (I think it's called Amy Maxwell and the 7 Deadly Sins) Amy has learned a thing or two about appreciating (and expressing love) for her family better, otherwise, that second book will be the last.

When I first started reading this story, I became a little confused until I realized that the author was going into main characters fantasies right along with the story line. I also realized the fantasy was written in italics. That helped tremendously as Amy was constantly imputing her fantasies into real life. I think many people who feel unappreciated and unstimulated add fantasy to their lives as one might put a cherry on top of their bowl of vanilla ice cream, just to make it seem more interesting. But, for Amy, some of her fantasies started being fulfilled whether good or bad and she found herself having to draw from strengths she did not know she possessed.

This is an okay story. I had several issues with the main character, Amy, and the way she lets her husband and kids get away with not doing much of anything around the house. Also, I guess my sense of humor is different enough that I didn't find things funny that were obviously meant to be. The overall plot just seems too far fetched to be believable, rather like a B movie.

I fully expected to be bored and abandon this book after a couple of chapters; based on the description and the cover, I wouldn't have paid for it. But I was drawn in from the beginning of the first chapter. A very human and relatable heroine, with humorous writing and a plot that twisted just enough to avoid being cliche and yet not make the reader dizzy. I absolutely love the ending, it felt wistful yet affirming, and I'm definitely looking forward to finding more books by the same author.
