Former Mayor Wharton lands job at ALSAC

Updated

Former Memphis Mayor A C Wharton has found a new part-time job.

ALSAC, the organization tasked with fund-raising for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, has hired Wharton to assist the organization in fundraising.

"I am honored to join ALSAC part time and help continue my support of the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a cause near and dear to my heart. I look forward to helping leverage the connections I have made in Memphis and across the country with people who share my passion for St. Jude and the life-saving research and treatment which benefits children across the U.S. and around the world," Wharton wrote in a statement.

Former Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong was also recently hired by St Jude.

St. Jude has announced plans for a $7 billion expansion of its campus, and fundraising will be a pivotal component of that project. Before he left office, Wharton called St. Jude the "big dog" of the north end of Downtown.

Rick Shadyac, president and CEO of St. Jude, said Wharton has been a "tremendous supporter" of St. Jude over the years, and the organization is looking forward to that commitment continuing in his new role.

A C Wharton Jr., former Mayor of Memphis, has joined ALSAC part time to assist our organization in sustaining and building stronger relationships with current and prospective St. Jude supporters in the greater Memphis and key markets across the country, as well as with our multicultural audiences," Shadyac said.
