The history of the 305 phone number area code - Axios Miami
Long before Pitbull called himself Mr. 305, everyone in Florida had a claim to the area code.
Flashback: The Sunshine State was assigned 305 back in 1947, one of the first 86 area codes created in the U.S., the Miami Herald reports.
As the state grew, new area codes were assigned to different parts of the state.
It wasn't until 1996 that Broward County was stripped of the 305 and given 954 instead, the Sun Sentinel reported. That led to technical issues, frustrations and even a lawsuit.
Now, Miami-Dade and a portion of the Florida Keys lay sole claim to being "305 till I die."
The latest: Phone companies are running out of local 305 and 786 numbers, so a new area code was approved last year for Miami-Dade and the Keys: 645.
