Long before Pitbull called himself Mr. 305, everyone in Florida had a claim to the area code.

Flashback: The Sunshine State was assigned 305 back in 1947, one of the first 86 area codes created in the U.S., the Miami Herald reports.

  • As the state grew, new area codes were assigned to different parts of the state.
  • It wasn't until 1996 that Broward County was stripped of the 305 and given 954 instead, the Sun Sentinel reported. That led to technical issues, frustrations and even a lawsuit.
  • Now, Miami-Dade and a portion of the Florida Keys lay sole claim to being "305 till I die."

The latest: Phone companies are running out of local 305 and 786 numbers, so a new area code was approved last year for Miami-Dade and the Keys: 645.

Some people will pay a lot of money to get a 305 area code.
