gasket design flaw
1 Star
gasket design flaw
I purchased this item 7 months ago to replace an identical one where the gasket had deteriorated over time. I suppose the deterioration is due to the rubber gasket being in constant contact with gasoline. This morning when I went to the garage I detected the strong smell of gasoline. I discovered that the replacement fuel valve was leaking too. The rubber part of this fuel valve does not seem to be able to handle constant contact with gasoline. This is a basic design flaw.

This part worked flawlessly on my garden tractors. It’s a universal part so it’ll work on about anything with a 1/4 fuel line. It’s OEM Genuine Briggs & Stratton and definitely speaks to quality. When installing, use a thick amount of dish soap on the inside and outside of the seal. Use a screwdriver to move it up and down the inside of the seal. Then, install 3 of the sides into the tank, and use your pointer finger on the final side sticking out and force it in. Once the rubber grommet is fully seated, install the petcock. Begin lightly, push it in until you get resistance and it stops. Then twist it around while pushing, this helped me. You’ll probably be making slow progress while installing this, but eventually it’ll go in. It will require some strength. After you work it around a few times, force it in hardly using both your hands cupped and not applying pressure on the fuel outlet or valve knob. Only on the bottom of the petcock. This isn’t easy to install because it’s such a good fit. It’s the perfect product and I’ll buy again! Much better than the knock-offs!

OK I am in Florida, and we were getting ready for Hurricane Matthew so of course that meant checking the generator I use to run most of the house when the power goes out. Well I discovered the rubber grommet around the fuel on/off valve had disintegrated because of the stupid ethanol in the fuel. So 5 days before the hurricane is due to hit, I am trying to repair the generator that we may need very badly during and after the storm.

Well I ordered the replacement, and when it arrived, it was a perfect fit! And it took literally all of less than 5 minutes to fix. Since it came with a new valve also I replaced that while I was at it. Worked perfectly!! And the hurricane really did not bother us much in my area, sowe were good in both areas. Prep and storm!

If you have a leaky on/off valve or grommet, this is a perfect replacement, fit my Troy-built 5500 Generator fuel tank perfectly.

Bought this for a Generac generator after I noticed gas leaking down from the fuel tank. The old, damaged part was easy enough to remove but I noticed the new seal and stop valve need to be installed in a certain order to be successful. It is best to apply a small amount of liquid soap to the gasket or seal if you prefer and work it into the tank opening. I did this with the fuel tank removed. After the seal was in place I applied more soap/lubricant to the tip and length of the valve and gently worked the shut off valve into the seals opening being carful not to damage the filter part. The valve was a bit difficult to press all the way in and took a bit of effort but it all worked out with a bit of grunting and shoving. Just be carful not to twist too much so you don't break your new part. No worries though cause it seems to be made quite sturdy. I'm submitting this review before I put gas in the generator so can't tell you if the shut off valve works properly or not. I'm going on faith for a while. I tell you what, no news is good news so if you hear nothing more from me than all is good. Good luck.

Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2014
When turning on gas for my monthly startup on Jan 1st this valve broke of of leaving the filter inside the tank. Ordered from Amazon on the 1st and got it of the fourth of Jan. But in the meantime a storm was forecast and I got nervous and went to the shop that works on my small engine equipment but he did not have one but gave me a couple of tips.
First do not put the valve into the bushing up to the taper as the instructions say, makes it hard to push the bushing into the tank, if you don't have the valve in you can put the tank on a flat surface and with the heel of your hand apply enough pressure on it so it slides right in. Then put the valve in and push it into the bushing, this takes a bit of pressure and make sure it is going in straight, it does go in without too much trouble.
Second. Don't bother with dishwasher soap us Vaseline, it works better, this from a man that has done quite a lot of these so I took his advice and all went well. Going to order another for a spare. The hardest thing was getting the filter out of the tank

Bought this to replace the fuel shut off valve and gasket for my Generac 4200 portable generator. After 19 years, the gasket finally started leaking. Was happy to find this for the price. I removed the fuel tank from the top of the generator to make it a little easier. Replaced all the fuel lines while I had it apart. No big crisis to remove the old gasket and pop in the new one. Use care not to mar the tank surface when taking out the old gasket. Used a little silicone gel on the gasket and valve and installed the gasket into the tank, and then carefully worked the valve into the gasket hole. Take your time, keep the valve straight, and apply steady pressure. It'll seem like it doesn't fit, but it will slowly slide into place. I rotated the valve a little in each direction to seat it correctly. Make sure you align the shut off valve correctly if you're working on the tank while it's upside down. Its easy to have it wind up facing away from you when you turn the tank over. The gasket didn't seem as snug as the original, but no leaks, so, no problems. Doubt I'll get 19 years out of the replacement, but at this price, I now have spares on hand.

This shut off valve assembly fit the gas tank on my 25 year old Generac 3500XL generator exactly as promised. Pop the old one out using leverage with channel locks and a screwdriver. Takes some effort - so stay with it.
Installing the new was easier than I thought. Just follow the provided instructions using dish soap to aid in installation. Use something (screwdriver, etc) to push it into the tank, prying against the engine with upward pressure.
