My English was poor when I first came to Australia, I didn't know what a penis was. Some girls drew pen15 on my hand and said I was part of the club. I showed my teacher that the girls wanted me to be in their "club". She just awkwardly looked at me without saying anything. I thought maybe drawing on your hand was against the rules or something.

Actually it does. Figuratively is now an accepted definition of literally according to Merriam Webster and Cambridge dictionaries. Language changes in weird ways. Get used to it.
That's still kind of bullshit. I get that language is simply to communicate ideas, but doing so in a manner like this laughs in the face of word origins.
I've gotten used to it; I just think it's lazy and awfully representative of society.

I used to think the same, but the more I thought about it, the more I came to realize how incredibly complex communication is. The mere fact that by using an antonym we convey hyperbole is testament to both the complexity of language, and also the fact that written language is incredibly inadequate at expressing the vast range of emotions and ideas that we experience. It would seem that because of the latter, we have a tendency to resort to word trickery. Thus, we laugh in the face of word origins.
