Thinking of leasing a Mitsubishi Outlander?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $2,287 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $63 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive and Performance 5.6/10

The 2024 Outlander handles quite well for an SUV, with well-weighted steering and minimal body roll. Some critics say that the steering is a bit touchy and requires frequent corrections, but most agree that this Mitsubishi handles securely and competently. Ride quality is good over all but the roughest pavement, and the brakes are strong and bring the Outlander to a stop quickly. Like most crossovers, the Outlander is better driven on pavement than on rutted trails or access roads. It can tackle the occasional dirt road or gravel path, but the Outlander's ride quality degrades when driving over large bumps.

The Outlander has only one engine option: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and either front- or all-wheel drive. While this engine provides adequate power for driving around town, it feels lethargic when carrying a full load of passengers or cargo. You'll also need to carefully plan merging and passing maneuvers on the highway, as this motor tends to lose steam at higher clips. The CVT works smoothly and improves the Outlander's fuel economy, but it doesn't do the engine any favors when it comes to acceleration or general on-road performance. The Outlander can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Fuel Economy 9.0/10

The 2024 Outlander gets above-average fuel economy estimates for a compact SUV. Models with front-wheel drive get an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while all-wheel-drive models get 24/30 mpg city/highway.

Interior 7.5/10

The 2024 Outlander impresses with a well-made and modern cabin with mostly high-quality materials. While there are some hard plastics present, most are placed well out of view. Higher trims get luxe amenities like semi-aniline leather upholstery. This Mitsubishi is a three-row SUV that seats seven people. The front row has spacious and comfy seats, and there's plenty of head- and legroom. The second row has enough room for adults, but the seats are less padded and more flat than those upfront. The Outlander's minuscule third row is a weak link though. The seats aren't especially comfortable, and there isn't enough space for most adults. These seats are best left to kids or as last-resort accommodations for adults on quick jaunts. Forward visibility is very good, but rear visibility is hindered slightly by the third-row headrests and the SUV's thick roof pillars.

The Outlander is a mixed bag when it comes to cargo room. Space is slim behind the third-row seats, with just 11.7 cubic feet. Folding down the third-row seats unlocks a respectable 33.5 cubic feet. With both rear rows folded, the Outlander provides a massive 79.7 cubic feet of space. That's one of the highest maximum cargo capacities in the segment.

Value 8.2/10

The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander has an average value rating for the compact SUV class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.4/10

The 2024 Outlander gets mostly good scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Mitsubishi also comes equipped with standard safety features such as forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good for its ease of use.

Quality and Reliability 80.0/100

The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander has a predicted reliability score of 80 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 6.6/10

The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander receives a critics' rating that is below average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

How Much Is a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander?

The 2024 Outlander starts at $28,395 for the base ES trim, which comes with niceties like cloth upholstery, an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control and many driver-assistance features. The SE is priced from $31,445 and gains synthetic leather and suede upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control and more. The SE Black Edition (base MSRP: $32,645) gets a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and unique blacked-out interior and exterior styling. The range-topping SEL, which starts at $34,945, adds amenities like genuine leather upholstery, heated rear outboard seats, tri-zone automatic climate control and unique exterior badging and styling elements.

Which Is the Best Mitsubishi Outlander Model to Buy?

We recommend moving up to the midrange SE trim. While the base ES model has lots of standard driver-assistance features, the SE gains many comfort and tech features that aren't available in the ES, including synthetic leather and suede upholstery, a larger touch screen, a power liftgate and more. The SE also comes standard with more driver-assistance features, such as stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system and traffic-sign recognition.

U.S. News Expert Review

Zach Doell is a vehicle testing editor for U.S. News Best Cars. He strives to demystify the car buying process and believes that there's a perfect vehicle out there for everyone.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is one of only two compact SUVs with a third row (the other being the Volkswagen Tiguan), which gives this small seven-seater a unique selling point. During my test drive of a 2023 Outlander, which I rented on Turo, I appreciated the SUV's relaxed ride quality, buttoned-down handling and lofty fuel economy. Its 181-horsepower engine isn't a dynamo, but it has enough muscle for most scenarios, and the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) keeps high-rpm droning to a minimum when accelerating hard. I was also pleased with the Outlander's user-friendly infotainment system and spacious first- and second-row seats, but that signature third row leaves a lot to be desired. It's cramped, awkward to access and severely limits cargo space when in use. I suggest checking out rivals like the Mazda CX-50, Hyundai Tucson or Toyota RAV4 if you just want a well-rounded five-seat SUV. If you're looking for a genuinely usable third row, shop a class size up for midsize SUVs like the Kia Telluride or Honda Pilot.

Is the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good SUV?

Yes, the 2024 Outlander is a good vehicle, but it has some notable shortcomings. This SUV has a well-built and nicely appointed interior, a long list of standard driver-assistance features, a decent infotainment system, comfortable front seats and one of the largest maximum cargo capacities in the compact SUV class. It also handles quite well and sports above-average fuel economy estimates. On the downside, the Outlander has a sluggish engine and a tiny third row.

If you want an SUV with similar refinement, a more potent engine and a slightly less cramped third row, check out the Toyota Highlander. If you can make do with two rows of seats, you should take a look at the Nissan Rogue, which shares numerous traits with the Outlander, or segment stalwarts like the Honda CR-V or Hyundai Tucson. The latter two vehicles have plenty of cargo room, well-built interiors and a healthy assortment of standard driver-assistance features. There's also the plug-in-hybrid Outlander, which we review separately.

2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Versus the Competition

Mitsubishi Outlander vs. Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue shares a platform with the Outlander, but despite a few similarities, the Nissan outshines its Mitsubishi counterpart. The Rogue has quicker acceleration and better fuel economy than the Outlander, and both vehicles have nicely crafted interiors. Although the Rogue has just five seats versus the Outlander's seven, the Rogue has a much more usable and spacious rear cargo area.

Mitsubishi Outlander vs. Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander might be a midsize SUV, but like the compact Outlander, it provides three rows of seats while retaining a fairly small footprint. The Toyota's third row is cramped but less so than the Outlander's. The Highlander also has more cargo room, a peppier engine and an intuitive infotainment system. The Outlander has a lower starting MSRP and better gas mileage, though.
